The Greek Disease hits Calabria

In Italy for every 100 INPS pensions there are 111 active workers, and the bill drops to 103 if we exclude professionals who pay contributions to private funds. And in 39 provinces out of 107, almost all in the Centre-South, the employed are less than social security checks. In Calabria the record: 67 workers per 100 pensioners.

Calabria is the birthplace of the name Italy, given to it by the Ancient Greeks who settled in this land starting from the 8th century BC. The region is the Magna Graecia, with the foundation along its coasts of many Greek city-states (pĆ³leis) that remained for centuries among the richest and most culturally advanced of their time. During this period, Calabria was the home of key figures in history such as PythagorasHerodotus and Milo.

Eventually, their sybaritic lifestyle led to the depopulation of these rich and cultured settlements. The same happened to Greece proper.

Punishment by Aperreamiento (Dogs)

Vasco Nunez de Balboa ordered the aperreamiento (punishment by dogs) of a group of forty natives guilty of sodomy. Spanish war dogs (like those kept by Argentine Presidential candidates) were an effective weapon for the eradication of pagan customs.

Tell me about yourself

‘My father was a Judean refugee. He moved to Europe with a few relatives, but there, he became a great and populous nation. The Europeans dealt harshly with us and oppressed us; they imposed heavy restrictions upon us. We cried to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our plea and saw our plight, our misery, and our oppression. The Lord freed us by a mighty hand and brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey" Free version Deuteronomy 26:5–10.

Milei's War Mastiffs

Javier Milei, the leading candidate to Argentina's presidency lives with 4 Spanish mastiff war dogs, each weighing 100 kg. The four are identical twins. The dogs have their own air-conditioned rooms. It is crazy, but less crazy than Pablo Escobar's crocodiles and hippopotami and panthers.

Another week misspent

I did no work all the last week. I spent no time in the gym or the pool. Took no sleeping pills and drank no wine. Did nothing worth remembering. I slept a lot and day-dreamt. Need to find a goal, like buying an apartment next to home for our little daughter. But is it realistic to plan so far ahead at age 77? If not, what? Wait for some disease and zehu! The painting shows the 5 Mast Barque Potosi. It was designed to carry guano from Peru to Germany. One of the last sailing ships built.

Fighting Slavery

The British Empire sent its powerful navy to chase and sink slave carriers from West Africa to Cuba and Brazil, places where strong malaria-resistant agricultural laborers were needed.
They rescued thousands. Three hundred years later, The Economist continues fighting the human trade.

This statement sets out The Economist Group's actions to understand all potential modern slavery risks related to its business and to put in place steps that are aimed at ensuring that there is no slavery or human trafficking in its own business and its supply chains. This statement relates to actions and activities during the financial year 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022.

As part of the independent global media and information-services industry, we recognise that we have a responsibility to take a robust approach to slavery and human trafficking, and we continue to invest into our internal risk & control structures.

Our organisation is fully committed to preventing slavery and human trafficking in its corporate activities, and to ensuring that its supply chains are free from slavery and human trafficking.

Is China collapsing? Really?

The world media is unanimously reporting China's accelerated crisis: demographic, economic, debts, banking, construction, etc. Yet China's GNP is growing at 5-6% this year (source: The Economist) in comparison with America's 1-2% and Europe's -1%.  Who is collapsing?

BTW, Israel is growing at 3-4% in 2023 which is very nice. Compared with the dark prophesies of the anti-government press. The Bourse believes in the HaAretz fish wrap and is considerably behind the wonderful rise of the NASDAQ. That is in spite of the 10% devaluation of the shekel vis-a-vis the dollar.  I believe that TASE will - eventually - synchronize with Nasdaq.

32 Celsius and cannot work. I cannot get organized with those Hinanit clients. Tenne and Helfgott are pending. Why do I not start working on them?

America The Audacious

The non-somnolent Biden government is showing a willingness to take surprisingly bold risks like the new industrial policy of offering 60% subsidy to chip fab and rare metals investments. And it is working: Taiwanese and South Koreans are moving factories to the USA. Israeli start-ups are also moving. Open borders are sucking in the workforce from all over the world. The streets show a terrible picture of drugged White youths, unpunished Black shoplifting, and diverse street prostitution, but the rot is not corroding the core.

Sleeping without sleeping pills

I have stopped taking pills. I turn around in bed till 3 AM and search about the Bauchi Meat Company and Galambi Ranch. Since we left, it has been decaying and emptied. They still remember the "Argentines".

"Amina explained that the wind surge hit several residential houses in areas like Liman Katagum, Jamda, Mararaban L/Katagum, Galambi, Zungur, Luda, Baram, etc in Bauchi and some parts of Tafawa Balewa Local Governments." Those are places I used to know and visit. The pic looks like the plot I have bush cleared for artificial pasture.

I have vivid dreams, not all nice.

A week lost

This week it was so hot that practically I did no work. Grandma Asia died in the hospital and we sat shivah - 7-day mourning. Many visitors. Grandkids were here destroying the furniture, as the kindergarten are on vacation.

I decided to get rid of sleeping pills and tonight I took none. In the end, I slept for a few hours. I am not tired.

Lebanon

Lebanon hosts a large number of "refugees" such as descendants of the 1948 Palestinians to recently arrived Syrians. The air pic shows AĆÆn el-HĆ©louĆ© "camp" (in fact, a dense neighborhood) of Tzidon. 60,000 persons live in 0.3 sq. km. and are maintained by the Americans. Last week there was a confrontation between armed factions, with 8 deaths. Lebanon does not allow its integration into the local population and economy.

Like Job

It is not only that my first friends are almost all dead, but also their children have reached middle age and are falling sick. Like Job, I may see the third and fourth generation following me on Earth.

"Job (Ayub) was a prosperous man, with faith in Allah, living somewhere in the north-east corner of Arabia. He suffers from a number of calamities: his cattle are destroyed, his servants slain by the sword, and his family crushed under his roof. But he holds fast to his faith in Allah. As a further calamity he is covered with loathsome sores from head to foot. He loses his peace of mind, and he curses the day he was born. His false friends come and attribute his afflictions to sin. These "Job's comforters" are no comforters at all, and he further loses his balance of mind, but Allah recalls to him all His mercies, and he resumes his humility and gives up self-justification. He is restored to prosperity, with twice as much as he had before; his brethren and friends come back to him; he had a new family of seven sons and three fair daughters. He lived to a good old age, and saw four generations of descendants. All this is recorded in the Book of Job in the Old Testament. Of all the Hebrew writings, the Hebrew of this Book comes nearest to Arabic."

Borrowing from usurers to pay debts

Aug 4 (Reuters) - Argentina's government agreed with Qatar a $775 million loan to use to make an International Monetary Fund (IMF) repayment due this Friday. The loan is to be repaid in 32 days and any default will be judged in Britain.

Argentina is grappling with a severe economic crisis with sky-high inflation and falling central bank reserves and is facing IMF repayments.

The Qatar loan will have the IMF's variable interest rate applicable to SDRs (IMF currency), which is currently 4.033% per annum. The funds will "fund the payment of Argentina's maturity with the IMF (for charges and surcharges) on August 4, 2023." The repayment will be made with a $1 billion bridge loan from the regional development bank CAF and $1.7 billion from the second tranche of a swap with China.

I know that Argentina is broke but asking for a short-term shark-loan from an Arab usurer is the road to debt-slavery. It will lose its independence and be sucked dry by those well-known Arab slave merchants.

Potash, down 33%

Last year there was a general expectation that the Russia-Ukraine war will cause an undersupply situation in the fertilizer market, but then the Canadians sent increasing quantities and the price fell 33%. After a good year 2022, the potash stocks are in the "Strong-Sell" category. This market is cyclical, and I am waiting out this bad season without doing anything. Pic.: Potash mine.
