Are Bats Birds? Are they Kosher?

The Wuhan virus was, before mutating in the Wuhan live animals and fresh meat market, a bat virus. Some Chinese cook, preparing one of those famous Chinese banquets with live monkey brain, swimming turtle soup, thousand years old eggs, and swallow nest soup, happened to buy a live bat and caught the virus. The rest is history.

This could never happen in Israel. Here, among the believers, bats are classified as birds and included in the Bible's list of impure animals that Jews should not eat. "These are the birds you are to regard as unclean and not eat because they are unclean: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture … and the bat."

In the old fig trees in my street live thousands fruit bats. Old men like me like to watch the street and the birds from the window. For some reason my bats cannot see the walls and in summer nights, they run into them, leaving their bat-shit mark. They are fewer than before as the invading Argentinian green parrots leave them few figs.

  1. This is incorrect. First, the jury is out if this did I indeed come from a bat. Your own intelligence sources have questions about this vis a vis a bio weapon developed virus. Next, applying science, not superstition to the Torah, a bat is a mammal however it does not fall into the acceptable cud chewing, cloven hooves category and therefore was and is forbidden.

    1. No, actually, you are the one who is incorrect. Or do you not remember the verses that consider bats to birds not "mammals"? Yes, this COULD be biological warfare but it's more probable that people simply eating and consuming food that SHOULD NOT BE EATEN is to blame for this. Get your facts straight before you mislead any others out there, please. This article is one of wisdom that everyone should be consuming in these days, no doubt.

    2. And another thing...
"... applying science, not superstition to the Torah,..."
Really, now? How ignorant of a statement can one manage to concoct, eh?
You MUST NOT apply Gentile 'science' to the Torah; the Torah is holy, remember? Rather, you MUST apply Jewish WISDOM to the Torah. Again, stop spreading unnecessary Gentile babble when the Torah was written to the Jew, first and foremost.

    3. The answer to the title question is that bats are mammals, no doubt, but apparently, the Torah calls them birds. Maybe Biblical birds include every flying animal. Truth is my Haredi friends, that many terms in the Torah are full of uncertainty and mystery, we have forgotten their true meanings and some of them we don't know how to interpret. Anyway, it was right to forbid us the eating of bats, wasn't it? Thanks we have the Torah. Godless Chinese have nothing.
